EFI Report 2025 published

The Exper­ten­kom­mis­si­on For­schung und Inno­va­ti­on (EFI) pre­sen­ted this year’s report to Fede­ral Chan­cell­or Olaf Scholz on 26 Febru­ary 2025. The six-mem­ber com­mis­si­on pro­vi­des sci­en­ti­fic advice to the Fede­ral Govern­ment and has been pre­sen­ting annu­al reports on rese­arch, inno­va­ti­on and Ger­many’s tech­no­lo­gi­cal per­for­mance sin­ce 2008.

The cur­rent report empha­si­zes the out­stan­ding importance of rese­arch and inno­va­ti­on (R&I) for the Ger­man eco­no­my, both loo­king back on the past legis­la­ti­ve peri­od and loo­king for­ward to the coming one. In addi­ti­on to recom­men­da­ti­ons for action for natio­nal R&I poli­cy, the 2025 report is dedi­ca­ted to the key topics of „Trans­for­ma­ti­ver Struk­tur­wan­del durch Digi­ta­li­sie­rung und Dekar­bo­ni­sie­rung“, „Quan­ten­tech­no­lo­gien“, and „Inno­va­tio­nen in der Was­ser­wirt­schaft“.

The EFI under­lines that an effi­ci­ent R&I sys­tem is cru­cial for the com­pe­ti­ti­ve­ness of com­pa­nies and the trans­for­ma­ti­on to an envi­ron­men­tal­ly fri­end­ly eco­no­my. It also streng­thens sove­reig­n­ty in key and future tech­no­lo­gies and sup­ports the digi­tal trans­for­ma­ti­on. Fede­ral Rese­arch Minis­ter Cem Özd­emir empha­si­zed the importance of inno­va­ti­ve strength for glo­bal com­pe­ti­ti­on and war­ned against the loss of pro­spe­ri­ty and secu­ri­ty wit­hout inde­pen­dent know-how.
