EU Commission lays the Foundation for a coordinated Transition to quantum-safe Encryption Methods:
The EU Member States, with the support of the European Commission, have published a roadmap to secure digital communication in the future using Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and protect it from potential attacks by Quantum Computers. These are considered a real threat to currently used encryption methods. A timely, comprehensive, and coordinated transition to PQC is intended to effectively counter this threat.
To initiate the transition, the Commission issued a Recommendation on a coordinated Implementation Roadmap in mid-April 2024. Subsequently, a dedicated working stream on PQC was established in cooperation with the NIS Coordination Group. The document now presented is the first outcome of this process. It contains concrete recommendations for a coordinated transition to PQC and measures to raise awareness among relevant stakeholders about the risks posed by Quantum Computers.
