Europe aims to become a Leader in Quantum Technologies:
In early July 2025, the European Commission presented its new strategy “Quantum Europe”. The goal is to build a resilient and sovereign Quantum Ecosystem and position Europe at the forefront of Quantum Technologies by 2030. The strategy focuses on research, infrastructure, and industrial policy.
Despite major advances in European Quantum Technology, the Commission notes ongoing shortcomings in technology transfer and the implementation of market-ready applications. In addition, the fragmentation of national strategies and roadmaps across Member States continues to hinder coherent development. With “Quantum Europe,” the EU is now leveraging its combined strengths: the strategy aims to translate cutting-edge research into market-ready applications, foster the growth of start-ups, and further enhance Europe’s scientific excellence. The five key areas of action are Research and Innovation, Quantum Infrastructure, Strengthening the Quantum Ecosystem, Space and Dual-Use Quantum Technologies, and Quantum Skills.
Implementation will take place in close cooperation with universities, start-ups, and industry. The process will be supported by a high-level advisory board consisting of leading researchers and technology experts. Additionally, a proposal for a European Quantum Act is planned for 2026, aimed at specifically improving the framework conditions for a strong and competitive Quantum Ecosystem.
