Fraun­ho­fer IPMS pres­ents Quan­tum Ran­dom Num­ber Gene­ra­tor

Q‑Dice gene­ra­tes Quan­tum Ran­dom Num­bers for secu­ri­ty-cri­ti­cal Appli­ca­ti­ons:

True rand­om­ness is a key pre­re­qui­si­te for modern cryp­to­gra­phic and secu­ri­ty-cri­ti­cal sys­tems, as deter­mi­ni­stic or inse­cu­re ran­dom num­ber gene­ra­tors can intro­du­ce vul­nerabi­li­ties in encryp­ti­on and authen­ti­ca­ti­on. Against this back­ground, the Fraun­ho­fer-Insti­tut für Pho­to­ni­sche Mikro­sys­te­me (IPMS) pre­sen­ted Q‑Dice in mid-June 2026 – a Quan­tum Ran­dom Num­ber Gene­ra­tor (QRNG) that pro­du­ces ran­dom num­bers based on Quan­tum Vacu­um Fluc­tua­tions. The sys­tem gene­ra­tes true ran­dom num­bers at bit rates of more than 4 Gbit/s, lever­aging intrin­si­cal­ly unpre­dic­ta­ble Quan­tum Effects. Unli­ke clas­si­cal algo­rithm-based approa­ches, the resul­ting rand­om­ness is non-deter­mi­ni­stic and the­r­e­fo­re not pre­dic­ta­ble or repro­du­ci­b­le. By mea­su­ring Quan­tum Cacu­um Fluc­tua­tions, Q‑Dice gene­ra­tes relia­ble Quan­tum Entro­py for a wide ran­ge of secu­ri­ty-cri­ti­cal appli­ca­ti­ons. The­se include secu­re com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons, data encryp­ti­on – for exam­p­le in the con­text of Quan­tum Key Dis­tri­bu­ti­on (QKD) or Post-Quan­tum Cryp­to­gra­phy (PQC) – as well as authen­ti­ca­ti­on, access manage­ment, and lar­ge-sca­le simu­la­ti­ons.

Q‑Dice has been deve­lo­ped with a strong focus on secu­ri­ty requi­re­ments. The qua­li­ty of the gene­ra­ted ran­dom num­bers has been vali­da­ted using estab­lished and inter­na­tio­nal­ly reco­gni­zed test pro­ce­du­res. The sys­tem meets the strin­gent requi­re­ments of the Bun­des­amt für Sicher­heit in der Infor­ma­ti­ons­tech­nik (BSI) accor­ding to AIS 20/31 and is cer­ti­fied as EAL3 (Eva­lua­ti­on Assu­rance Level) as well as PTG 3 (Phy­si­cal True Ran­dom Num­ber Gene­ra­tor). For dif­fe­rent appli­ca­ti­on sce­na­ri­os, the tech­no­lo­gy is available in two con­fi­gu­ra­ti­ons: as a robust 19-inch rack sys­tem for deploy­ment in local infra­struc­tu­re, and as a cloud-based solu­ti­on via the Fraun­ho­fer IPMS “Online Entro­py-as-a-Ser­vice” plat­form.
