New Pro­ject deve­lo­ps secu­re Con­trol and Gate­way Archi­tec­tures for dis­tri­bu­ted Quan­tum Sys­tems

Soft­ware-defi­ned Infra­struc­tu­re aims to streng­then Germany’s tech­no­lo­gi­cal Sove­reig­n­ty in the Field of Quan­tum Net­works:

Quan­tum Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on offers a wide ran­ge of poten­ti­al appli­ca­ti­ons in rese­arch, indus­try and secu­ri­ty. In the future, it is also expec­ted to enable the inter­con­nec­tion of Quan­tum Nodes, ther­eby lay­ing the foun­da­ti­on for the so-cal­led Quan­tum Inter­net. A pre­re­qui­si­te for this is that Quan­tum Nodes can be con­nec­ted, con­trol­led, and moni­to­red secu­re­ly and relia­bly – a chall­enge that has not yet been ful­ly sol­ved. Against this back­ground, the Tru­QuaC pro­ject was laun­ched in ear­ly June 2026 and is fun­ded by the Bun­des­mi­nis­te­ri­um für For­schung, Tech­no­lo­gie und Raum­fahrt (BMFTR) with €3.06 mil­li­on. In addi­ti­on to the XeedQ GmbH as the pro­ject coor­di­na­tor, the con­sor­ti­um includes the Qoro Quan­tum UG, the Johann Wolf­gang Goe­the-Uni­ver­si­tät Frank­furt am Main, and the Tech­ni­sche Uni­ver­si­tät Dres­den.

Tru­QuaC addres­ses a key bot­t­len­eck on the path towards a Quan­tum Inter­net: the secu­re con­trol and inte­gra­ti­on of hete­ro­ge­neous, lar­ge­ly iso­la­ted Quan­tum Nodes into exis­ting com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on net­works. The pro­ject aims to estab­lish a uni­fied soft­ware infra­struc­tu­re that abs­tracts the com­ple­xi­ty of dis­tri­bu­ted Quan­tum Sys­tems and mana­ges indi­vi­du­al hard­ware nodes as a sin­gle, resi­li­ent over­all sys­tem. To pro­tect data trans­mis­si­on, the pro­ject part­ners intend to imple­ment secu­re local gate­ways. The­se gate­ways will mana­ge user authen­ti­ca­ti­on, moni­tor the sta­tus of indi­vi­du­al nodes, dyna­mi­cal­ly dis­tri­bu­te com­pu­ta­tio­nal workloads, and auto­ma­ti­cal­ly rerou­te data traf­fic in the event of local net­work fail­ures. During the pro­ject, the inter­con­nec­tion of mul­ti­ple Quan­tum Nodes will be demons­tra­ted and tes­ted under rea­li­stic net­work con­di­ti­ons.

By estab­li­shing this soft­ware-defi­ned infra­struc­tu­re, the con­sor­ti­um aims to streng­then Germany’s long-term tech­no­lo­gi­cal sove­reig­n­ty in the field of Quan­tum Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on and increase the resi­li­ence of cryp­to­gra­phic infra­struc­tures against quan­tum-based thre­ats.
