Software-defined Infrastructure aims to strengthen Germany’s technological Sovereignty in the Field of Quantum Networks:
Quantum Communication offers a wide range of potential applications in research, industry and security. In the future, it is also expected to enable the interconnection of Quantum Nodes, thereby laying the foundation for the so-called Quantum Internet. A prerequisite for this is that Quantum Nodes can be connected, controlled, and monitored securely and reliably – a challenge that has not yet been fully solved. Against this background, the TruQuaC project was launched in early June 2026 and is funded by the Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (BMFTR) with €3.06 million. In addition to the XeedQ GmbH as the project coordinator, the consortium includes the Qoro Quantum UG, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, and the Technische Universität Dresden.
TruQuaC addresses a key bottleneck on the path towards a Quantum Internet: the secure control and integration of heterogeneous, largely isolated Quantum Nodes into existing communication networks. The project aims to establish a unified software infrastructure that abstracts the complexity of distributed Quantum Systems and manages individual hardware nodes as a single, resilient overall system. To protect data transmission, the project partners intend to implement secure local gateways. These gateways will manage user authentication, monitor the status of individual nodes, dynamically distribute computational workloads, and automatically reroute data traffic in the event of local network failures. During the project, the interconnection of multiple Quantum Nodes will be demonstrated and tested under realistic network conditions.
By establishing this software-defined infrastructure, the consortium aims to strengthen Germany’s long-term technological sovereignty in the field of Quantum Communication and increase the resilience of cryptographic infrastructures against quantum-based threats.
